Moonlight and Magnolias Conference Report

Lindi, Christy and I had the best time at M&M this past weekend. It's our home chapter's conference (Georgia Romance Writers). Lindi already posted a few photos. I have a few more I'd like to share. To the left is me with fellow Steeple Hill authors Debby Giusti (left) and Mae Nunn (middle). We had a great time at a bookseller/librarian breakfast. It gave us a chance to set out promo items and to meet with local booksellers and librarians (the ones especially friendly to romance). Sue Grimshaw, National Romance Buyer for Borders/Waldenbooks was also there. She did a couple of workshops that were especially helpful.

Our keynote speaker and also a speaker at the breakfast I attended was Linda Howard. Boy, what a great storyteller! She kept us spellbound with tales of a cow stuck in the mud and of a black panther staring her down in her own yard (with her beloved golden retrievers looking on). She's such a hoot! And very down to earth. I've always thought she was a great writer, and now I know that she's a natural-born storyteller. I imagine that's what makes her books so good.

By the way, can you tell I look 5 years younger and slimmer in this photo? Linda's advice is to lift your chin high enough to look good but not high enough that you can see up your nose. LOL! (Yes, we were laughing in the picture. She's so funny!)

Here I'm pictured with Sandra Chastain (left), one of the founding members of GRW, and current president of GRW, Anna DeStefano. Both of these woman are in the acknowledgements of my first book and have played a big role in my writing career. Sandra was the first person to read my story ideas and inform me that I was writing an inspirational. (I truly had no idea at the time!) And Anna has been such an inspiration as she persisted through the hard times and rejections to go on and make her first (and many subsequent!) sale(s) to Superromance.

Here's another GRW pal, Karen White, who writes the most gorgeous stories for NAL! (Yes, I said gorgeous. Her settings come to life for me!) I love her books.

And dare I tell that she likes to wear a tiara?

Note to Ruthy Logan-Herne: I asked Karen to take this photo just for you. :)

Stephanie Bond is another GRW friend who has been a huge help to aspiring authors. She's also been great about answering all my newbie questions (including panic moments during the signing of my contract!) She's very business savvy, and you can find tons of great info on her website. Oh, and did I mention she's also from the same area of Kentucky where I was born? :)

I don't have a photo, but we had a really nice time seeing Melissa Endlich of Steeple Hill while at M&M. Several of us took her out to dinner Friday night and had a fun evening!
All in all, I had a great conference. I know I'm partial, but I truly believe GRW puts on one of the best chapter conferences. If you haven't come before, I hope you'll consider coming next year!
Missy

P.S. Thanks to Mae for taking all the photos and for emailing them to me Sunday night!

  2. Hi, Missy!

Just for the record, I did _not_ pay Missy to say those nice things about me! (although I do wish she'd said that thing about holding your head up to look younger in pictures before that awful photo of me was taken!!). :-)

It was great seeing you again Missy at what I thought was one of the BEST M&M's I've been to.

    xoxo,
    Karen ;-)

  6. Looks like you all had a wonderful time. If you could move the conference a little distance away away from ACFW (time frame), I might drive down. Joyce Meyers is going to be in Atlanta and I've considered driving down for her program. Please let me know if you decide to go.
