Are You Called to Write?

I had a quick discussion with a writer friend the other day about whether or not our writing is a calling.

This may sound strange, but I'm not sure I'm called by God to write. I feel more like my writing is something that I love to do, have chosen to do, that God has chosen to bless. It's more like it's a blessing, not a calling (if that makes sense).

Years ago, as I was nearing the end of college, I had narrowed down my career choices to two fields--microbiology or physical therapy. While on a retreat, I angsted over the decision. I prayed like crazy all weekend, and finally, while lying flat on my back in a field, I felt God telling me to do what I love to do. And that made it easy to choose. I loved microbiology but had felt like maybe I shouldn't work behind a microscope, that maybe I should be working to help people like a physical therapist would do.

Well, I followed what I thought God had told me to do and chose to go to grad school to study microbiology. And once I got my first job, I realized that even though I was behind a microscope most of the day, I also had co-workers--people to relate to. And I found I could make a difference in the lives of patients even though I never saw them and they would never know who I was.

The lesson I learned? God could use me wherever I ended up. I truly think God would have used me just as well had I chosen to got to PT school. And now that I'm writing, I think God will multiply my efforts to reach readers (I pray for that!).

Are we called to a particular career? Maybe so. Maybe I'm totally off base. Maybe God wanted me to go into writing to begin with! :) But I think God is at work in the world and wants us to join in--wherever that might me.

What are we called to do? We're called to love God with all our heart, soul, strength and mind, and to love our neighbors as ourselves. (Luke 10:27) I think that's our true calling.

What do you think?

  1. Missy, I was just reading about this topic in my morning devotions today and came upon a quote I've seen several times that never fails to resonate:

"The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world's deep hunger meet."--Frederick Buechner.

  2. I love that quote! My husband uses it often.

Thanks for reminding me of it! I hadn't thought of that in relation to this topic. And it confirms my career choice. And now my love of writing. :)

  3. Missy,
Great post. Thanks for sharing. This is an interesting topic. I think our joy comes from God and when we glorify Him we are joyful!!
And I don't think we would be doing this writing thing if it didn't bring us joy.

  4. I agree with you as to what our "first" call is, and that is to love God. I believe if we do what God is asking of us then he will bless what we do. If we do what we want w/o seeking him first, how would we know if we were within his will?

    Thanks for your thoughts,
    Mimi in MN

  5. Thanks for stopping by, Mimi!

The hard part for me, sometimes, though, is knowing whether it's truly His will or my desire! I guess that takes lots of prayer.
