The Way We Work

How do you write your first drafts? Do you prefer long stretches of writing time, or can you work in bit and snatches between errands, feeding kids, cooking meals, or before and after your full-time job?

My dream would be to go away by myself or with my critique group to the beach for a couple of weeks, or even a month, and to write a rough draft straight through. Although, now that I think about it, I don’t think I could stand to leave my family that long! So maybe I could go for a week, then take another week later. :)

That’s my dream because I love to write round-the-clock while the ideas are flowing and I’m in the groove. Life, however, doesn’t usually allow that.

So, since we can’t usually get to go away to the beach at the drop of a hat, what do you do to get the first draft down? Can you share some of your secret methods?
P.S. The beautiful photo was found at Flickr and is by johnjan99ca.

  1. When I'm writing my first draft, when that new-story love is fresh, I have to have a notebook with me wherever I go. I usually do this anyway, but it's a necessity when the creative juices are flowing in abundance. I can't be still until they are out of my head and on paper. I literally eat and sleep the story. I go to bed thinking about what's coming next and wake ready to write. Then, when the draft is done and I start doing revisions, I'm ready to kill them both and make it a short story--a tragedy :-P

  2. ROFL, Mindy!! I'm kind of the same way. I usually need a little break from it before revising. Then I can fall in love with it again.

I'm not good about remembering to carry around a notepad. I end up grabbing scrap pieces of paper and receipts. I also recently typed the new opening for my book on my cell phone "memo pad". :)

  3. I'm wondering if I have a memo pad on my cell phone????

Lately, I've been carrying around a notebook too. On the way to work, on the way home, sometimes I will have some good thoughts. So far I've got 2 pages of "stuff"

I think it will be good stuff if I can just get off the internet and do a little writing!
