GOALS: ACFW Conference 2008!!

I've been talking about this conference since I left Dallas last year!

Last year was my first time EVER attending a writers conference. I learned so much, got to ooh and ahh over writers I loved reading. I shook in my heels waiting to meet with the editor and agent. Last year I wanted to do it all and DID!

This year, I'm going in with a little different perspective. Of course, I'll still be
wide-eyed and ecstatic about everyone I see. But this year, I'm going to try to keep my ears open and just take in all I can because there is so much to learn.

Here's a few simple things I'm doing to prepare.

  • I have my one-sheet completed, but will probably only take a handful of copies. Last year I printed out ten, and that was just too many.
  • I updated my business card and have that batch ready to go. Last year, I was all about having my picture plastered everywhere. Don't ask me why, it's not like I'm a model for Cover Girl or anything. However seeing my picture all over my business cards and one sheets, you would've thought I was striving for something other than getting published. But I digress. This year the business cards are simple, minus my photo, they are elegant and have the information on them that others need to reach me.
  • I'm already selecting outfits to take to conference. Being comfortable is key, but I'm going to dress business casual. After all, we are networking. We are meeting other authors, agents and editors and we always want to put our best foot forward. I'll be saving my business suit for my editor/agent appointments, because during that time you want to step up your wardrobe, but the rest of the time, casual and appropriate is best.

This year I have goals for conference. Perhaps that's nothing new to you, but I'm the type of person that goes through life by the seat of her pants. Well, the seat's getting pretty worn, so that means I need a better game plan. My goals for this year are as follows:

  • Enjoy myself.
  • Take good notes and don't be afraid to ask questions.
  • Participate in Susan May Warran and Rachel Hauck's Brainstorming session (I mean to throw out my idea and watch the group run with it!)
  • Branch out and meet some editors and agents I don't know much about.
  • Do not freak out about the editor and agent appointments this year. Last year they said no, and I survived. It prepared me for the smaller conference I attended a week later.
  • Don't try and do it all. Do what I want to do and what is best for my career.
  • Enjoy this 5 days I'll be with my friends and fellow writers. I'll be away from work for this time, so I need to enjoy it!
  • Don't fret about being away from my family. My husband is responsible and a wonderful caretaker. He can hold down the home fort with out me!

Okay, I've laid out my goals. What are yours?

  1. My goals are to learn, to have fun, to hang with my FAITH sisters, to meet/learn about more/different agents and editors, and to keep my focus on The One who is bringing us all together :-)

  2. Great goals, Christy! You'll be all ready and will have a great conference, I'm sure!

  3. Ladies- I envy you getting to go to ACFW this year. I've yet to get to go (sigh), but maybe next year, God willing.

I'll be praying for your safe trip and return home. Hope you have a great time!!! I'm excited to hear your stories afterward.

  4. Excellent post, Christy. However, the reason for your photo everywhere is so that people remember who they talked to at conference. LOL, you are not egotistical when you help people remember you. are gorgeous! Just had to toss that in there.

My goals, hmm, to finish my book before I get there. Honestly, this year is just a learning year for me. I'm giving it all to the Lord because I have no idea what He wants this time. I decided to do my best to be professional and a good listener this year. I have sooooooooo much to learn.
Oh, and I'm a volunteer in several places at the ACFW conference this year.
