Minneapolis and ACFW Conference, Here I Come!

I was so disappointed not to go to the ACFW conference last year. But this year, I'll be there with bells on (as my mom says)! I'm really looking forward to the fellowship, the singing, the workshops, the time with industry professionals, and the chance to meet my editor in person for the first time!

Also, I'll have the opportunity to take part in a huge book signing at the Mall of the Americas. There will be 120 authors there, and I'm so excited to be in the midst of them!

If you're attending, and this is your first conference, I thought I'd share some first-timer tips.

*Don't try to do everything or you'll end up drained. Choose workshops you're especially interested in, and make sure to rest every now and then.
*Take some time to just sit in the lobby or to chat with friends. Take advantage of the chance to get to know your online buddies.
*Don't miss an opportunity to sit with an editor or agent at a meal. (In other words, don't be too chicken to do it!) :) On the other hand, don't monopolize the ed/ag either. Let everyone at the table get a chance to talk with him/her.
*Be prepared. And don't wait til the night before to make business cards, etc. (Yeah, I'm speaking from experience here!) Also, plan well ahead to work on your one-sheet. It may take longer than you think to pull one together.
*Make a folder for important papers to take with you. I always start one as soon as I make my hotel or plane reservations. Then whenever I plan a dinner or event, I write that on the outside of my folder so I have a record of it. (If you're more savvy than I am, you could put it in your PDA.) I also write cell phone numbers for all my friends on that folder so I have them with me at all times. Once I arrive, room numbers go on there as well.
*Wear comfortable clothes and shoes, but look professional. And you may need a sweater or jacket for meeting rooms.
*Please, please, put your cell phone on silent or even better, turn it off. And do not answer a call in a conference room or during a session! (That happened at another conference, and the woman started talking right in the middle of the workshop!)
*Don't forget to check current airline security regulations for carry-ons and find out the new luggage weight restrictions. If you're not careful, you could get stuck paying extra for luggage.

I guess that's all I can think of now. I need to get busy, making sure I have all my promotional items ready!

I hope to meet you there! Does anyone else have any helpful suggestions?

  1. I do the folder thing too. It's about the only thing I'm organized at :-P Every email or piece of paper I get that regards conference, goes into that folder. Now let's just pray I don't walk out of the house without it!
