Save the Cat! by Blake Snyder

I went to an amazing workshop at RWA National. It was called Save the Cat, taught by Blake Snyder. It's also the title of his book:

Of course, Mr. Snyder, in his endearing way, poked fun at himself for writing a second (and upcoming 3rd) book (apparently, it wasn't the last book we'll need!). :)

The title is based on the fact that to make the reader care about your hero, all you need to do is have him save a cat (or dog or child)--to do something nice. It's a beat that we see in most good stories.
Be sure to visit his website,, and check out his "tools" page. He offers a copy of his Beat Sheet (A chart with 15 beats to fill out for typical story structure). He also analyzes The Wedding Crashers by filling out his sheet for that movie.
I've already ordered the book and will look forward to getting it so I can share more about what's inside. I hope you'll check out this book. I can't wait to get my copy!

P.S. Check out my personal blog to see photos from conference!

  1. Sounds great, Missy. I know the workshop must have been great.

  2. I'll share my notes with you, Lindi. We need to have a brainstorming session soon.

  3. I want to see those notes! I'm so sad I didn't get to go. I signed up for the screen writing course at ACFW and was so disappointed it was changed. Hopefully, we'll get that back next year.

  4. I think I want to try and make RWA next year. I'll definitely have to check this guy out and get the book. Thanks Missy!
