Giving Thanks

This week we take time out of our chaotic schedules to slow down (hopefully) and celebrate Thanksgiving. We may reflect on the year and think on those things we have to be thankful for. But have you ever stopped to think that the Bible tells us to be thankful for everything? EVERYTHING!

Paul urged the Philippians in Phil. 4:6 "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." The Ephesians were also instructed in Eph. 5:20 "always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ." Knowing the importance of this, Paul also shared with the Colossians in Col. 3:15 & 17 ". . . and be thankful." "And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him."

Notice that no where in those verses were there any disclaimers. Give thanks, unless. . . Give thanks except for. . . Yet when was the last time you gave thanks for that car that cut you off on the highway or the cancer that claimed someone you dearly loved? Wow. Suddenly giving thanks just got a lot tougher.

The words in those verses were not written by someone who lived a charmed life. Paul endured beatings and scourging, shipwrecks, and countless jail cells. But he knew this life was temporal, and that he had the greatest gift of all--eternal life, through Jesus. We may not like our circumstances, but God is still in control, and He's placed people in our lives for this very season. For that, we can be thankful

As we begin this holiday season, I want to say how thankful I am for each and every one of you. It was no mistake when God brought together six struggling authors. And it's no mistake that you're here with us.

Happy Thanksgiving!

  4. Happy Thanksgiving to all. And yes, we do have a lot to be thankful for. And we know who to thank.
