Caught on the Hamster Wheel

Ever feel like you're goin' and goin' and never getting anywhere? You want to do this and this and that, yet you can't seem to accomplish any of it.

Welcome to my weekend. Don't get me wrong, it was a glorious weekend. One I'd looked forward to for weeks. My husband and sons were gone until Monday. That left me and my daughter, but she's a teenager. It's not like I see her anyway. That meant I'd have an entire weekend, nearly three whole days, to write and relax and write some more.

Yeah right.

A few days before, I started painting our den. But I needed to rearrange the room, too. We got a new television over the holidays, one that would not fit in our old armoire. So we gave that to our daughter, which left us improvising on a TV stand until we decide where we want to put the thing.

So my mind raced between painting, writing, and arranging. I'd paint a small segment, all the while watching HGTV hoping for inspiration. Then I'd run to my desk and try to write. Ugh! There was no inspiration. Then I conned my daughter into helping move the smaller sofa from the living room into the den, only to make her help me move it back two days later.

You see how I can absolutely drive myself bonkers? I've never felt so ADD in all my life

Finally, after piddling in my office for a while, making tie-backs for the curtains and contact-papering the visible side of an ugly file cabinet, I resolved to make myself write. Didn't matter if it was crap, I HAD to write. And ya know what? I did. I nailed a scene that'd been perplexing me for months. And it led to another I'd never imagined.

Yes, I'd finally accomplished something.

I'd love to say I finished multiple chapters, but I didn't. I'd love to say I finished painting my den. But I didn't. Arrangement for the room? I have no idea.

Have you ever been torn between your want to's and your need to's? Overwhelmed by your surroundings or even life? How do you stay focused? Or are you easily distracted?

  1. I had to laugh when I read this because your back-and-forth sounds so much like me! It's a wonder I ever get anything done.

  2. GG, I'm pretty sure that if I were a dog I'd be chasin' my tail :-)

  3. LOL, Mindy. I can just see you chasing your tail. :)

I'm so glad you got your scene figured out! Once you get back into the swing of things, you won't let the extras (of even the have-tos) distract you from your story.

I loved the hamster wheels pic! LOL That's definitely me on some days.

  4. I love that you found a blonde that is running in the hamster wheel. How perfect for your post!

And if you'll recall I was up one morning (not recently) about 4 am washing cabinets. The reason for me being up that early was to write. I believe I had a clear case of avoidance!

Glad you did accomplish your writing this weekend. And I too watch HGTV for inspiration. I love Food Network better, though. I'm hoping some of the Food Network Hosts' talents will filter by osmosis through the TV and into my brain to make me a better cook!

  5. Mindy,
I think I'm easily distracted. Lately I've been struggling between writing, Bible study, and life. There are only so many hours in the day. I need more.
