How Do You Prepare To Leave?

Angie here:

Today I'm leaving for Indianapolis for ACFW board meetings. I've been preparing. Yes. But I find I have a nasty habit when I plan to travel. I don't sleep the night before. There always seems to be a zillion chores, errands, and last minute stuff that pops up and must be done before I leave.

I've been packing, sorting, working on opportunities that suddenly appeared today. It isn't as if I didn't plan well. I've been doing a little bit for several days toward the trip prep. And yet, here I am at 3:46 a.m. finally writing my blog and needing to leave by 5:30 a.m. to get to the airport for my flight.

How is this possible?

My next question is why does it happen every time? I know this week has been very exciting as I wrap up the Creative Cooking for Colitis Cookbook. I've even talked to a specialty store here and they will be carrying it. Lots of things to do to get the display set up. But this is not the first time exciting things have come up last minute and I pull an all-nighter.

So I'd love to hear if this resembles your life or if you have suggestions that help minimize the departure frenzy. I'm sure there are better ways.

But what are they?

Do share! You never know how many other secret frenzy travelers you could help :-) In the meantime, I'll be snoozing on the plane again.

PS I'm a guest post over on today and ironically, the post is about emotional health... I bet sleep would be a good start, ;-)

  1. I NEVER can sleep the night before I'm flying somewhere!! For me, it seems to be partly last minute things I didn't think of and also being too keyed up to shut my eyes. I'm usually up printing a coupon for the off-site parking at the airport, checking to make sure I have my boarding passes and paperwork, moving money from my everyday wallet to my conference walled, changing purses, digging for dressy shoes that I remember last minute, choosing a book to read on the plane...

I don't know if I have a solution, Angie. I usually make a list. But I always remember things at the last minute anyway.

I hope you have a great trip!! Thank you for serving on the board.

  2. I don't sleep well either and now that I'm having problems with my eyes and wearing glasses more than my contacts, it will be interesting to see how my travels go this summer. I hope you manage to catch up on some of your sleep.

  3. I am at least in good company :-)

  4. Yes, thank you for serving on the board Angie!

I definitely don't rest well before a flight. When I was in Denver, leaving ACFW last year, I slept in my clothes. Well, I had to catch the 3am shuttle and was afraid I'd overslept - which I did!

Had I not slept in my clothes, I would have been late. Thankfully, I wasn't late.
