Pushing Ourselves

Missy, here. And this is a photo taken of my daughter on the high ropes course last weekend while the church youth group was on a retreat. Scary, seeing her in the tree tops, isn't it?! I wasn't there, but my friend, who chaperoned, was kind enough to text me this photo while my daughter was sky high! LOL Of course, it made my stomach hurt. :)

Have you stepped out on a limb lately? And I don't mean literally, although please tell us if you have. :) But I'm talking about in your writing.

Have you made a leap to write something that's been on your heart, that maybe you don't feel qualified to write? Or maybe you feel you don't have the strength to go there yet?

Or if you have written it, have you taken the big step to send your work (your baby!) to a contest? Have you braved sending your work to an editor or agent?

If you look closely at the photo, you'll see all kinds of ropes and safety equipment. Similarly, God has us covered. If God wants us to write for Him, then He'll be there to catch us if we fall. He'll be there to comfort when we get rough feedback or a rejection. He'll be there to encourage us along the way as we take those risks and step out on those limbs.

Yesterday, a friend from the Faith, Hope and Love Chapter of RWA, Sandra van den Bogerd, posted a praise. Three months ago, she shared with the email loop a Scripture she was clinging to. She persisted. And she just sold to Steeple Hill Love Inspired Suspense! I'll share with you the verses she shared with us three months ago:

Hebrews 10:35-36
So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.

I encourage you to persevere, to get out there on that high ropes course and do what God is calling you to do!

  1. When I (and my hubby) made the decision for me to attend ACFW this year, we stepped way out on a very thin branch. Notice I didn't say limb. But, God has been faithful every step of the way, and each month when funds are short because of the large chunk taken away somehow He mysteriously sends us what we need. Yes, the money comes from legitamate sources, but in such unusual ways that you know God's hand is in the situation.

  2. So very cool, Dianna! I love to see God work like that.

  3. Great post, Missy! I just recently decided to change from fiction to non-fiction (for a while at least) based on God's urging and my husband's comment "It's a no-brainer, Edwina. You have a story to tell, so tell it." Alrighty-then. Sweet Dianna Shuford encouraged me to pitch at the conference next week. So I've stepped out on the really thin wire!

    Thanks, Missy!!

  4. Oh, wow, the writer in me is already weaving a story based on Diana's aside that the money came from legitimate sources. LOL. We serve an awesome God. Thanks so much Missy for sharing my news. I received my list of revisions today and spoke with my editor about cover art etc. It's all very exciting, but now I have to come down from my cloud and get back to work.

  5. Edwina, I hope the pitch goes well! I look forward to spending more time with you at conference!

Sandra, thanks for stopping by!! Congrats again on the sale!! You'll be amazed at how quickly everything will go now. :)

And LOL about your comment on getting a story idea from Dianna!

  6. By the way, Sandra, do you have a release date yet?
