Lindi here. Yes, in real life I AM married to my hero! But that's not what I'm talking about here today. Today I'm talking fictional heros.
I recently finished a first draft on a book. I read it through once, jotting notes and making changes. I've started the revision process where I'm making these changes.
But, something is missing. Something I can't pin down. Just something.
I keep going, tweaking here, cutting there.
Then it happens. But this 'it' didn't have anything to do with the manuscript I am working on. It has to do with my book Summer's Song, which was just released.
The morning the books come in the Fedex box, and I grab one and hold onto it, I realize what is missing from my current manuscript.
A LOVE for my hero.
Because I realize I'm still enamored with my hero in Summer's Song, Levi.
Now before you think I'm weird or something, remember I'm speaking as a writer. As someone who spent a LOT of time with these two characters. This book was written, rewritten and tweaked for a period over 4 years. I spent a lot of time with Levi and his attributes. And flaws.
So this is it, folks. Confession of a writer. I have to let Levi go. Holding the book made me realize he's out there for the world. To love. To not-so-much-love.
A couple of days after the Fedex delivery, and holding the book in my hands, 'it' happened. Remember the it from above?
The new manuscript started swirling inside me. That's the best way I can describe it. Like I'm totally becoming immersed in it, and everything is starting to take form. My new hero is named Brett. Now that Levi is out in the world, I Brett Brett and I have started bonding.
I'm learning more of what makes Brett, Brett. And of course, God intervened, which is always good. And necessary. :)
How about you? Have you had a hero in a novel, one that you've written or read, that has had you enamored for a long time? What made him so special?
