Sicker by the Minute

Missy, here. Have you ever gotten a cold that hit you suddenly and seemed to worsen by the minute?

Well, that's what hit me yesterday (compliments of my daughter, who was so generous with her germs!). At first, I thought maybe I was allergic to something in the air. A runny nose. Sneezing. I kept hoping it wasn't the dreaded cold. All weekend I'd tried to avoid my daughter's coughs and sneezes, but she's an affectionate child who loves to cuddle with mom. :) So when the sniffles turned into a headache and pressure behind my eyes, I knew this wasn't hay fever.

The good thing about being a writer is I  don't have to call in sick. I can push through (with the help of Alavert-D and Motrin). Although, I did take a short nap when I started dozing off while reading through my proposal--hoping it was a reaction to the illness or meds and not a reflection on the writing! :)

By evening, I wanted to whine a little and have someone to take care of me, wanted a little pampering. Unfortunately, moms don't usually get much of that. My husband, at least, did have compassion on me and brought home dinner. He brought it from our Wednesday night church supper, so I even got dessert! :)

How do you deal with a common cold? Any recommendations for favorite cold medicines or tips for dealing with the congestion?

  1. Missy, the moment I feel as though I might have a cold coming on, I start taking Airborne. Most times, whatever was trying to come on is gone by the next day. Others might refute it, but I swear by the stuff. Even if I do get the cold, I think it shortens the duration. And since it has all natural ingredients, it certainly can't hurt me. Oh, and no side effects either.

That's my two cents. I'll shut up now:-) Hope you feel better soon.

  2. Hi Missy, I hope you're feeling better soon. I take Amol as soon as I feel something coming on. It's a German herbal mixture, probably similar idea to Mindy's. Lemon in hot water is nice, too. But yeah, hubby bringing home supper is the best! :)

  3. Mindy, I used to have some. I'll be sure to check! I also have zinc lozenges, I think.

Sandra, I've never heard of that! I'll check to see if we have it here in the States. Thanks for the recommendation!

  4. I just found a description of Amol. Here's what's in it:

Indian Melissa, clove, cinnamon bark, lemon, peppermint, lavender, menthol, alcohol

Sounds like it would be soothing!

  5. And the alcohol might make you forget just how bad you feel :-P

  8. Sharon, my college roommate always told me that! She swears by it. But I can't drink it! I've tried over and over but the salty taste makes me gag. :)

I wonder if they make it in pill form yet...
