Beauty from Ashes - Part One

Mindy here, and this was the scene at our ranch a year ago today. Forgetting the smoke for a moment, look at the landscape. The parched ground, the pine tree dying from lack of water, the receding pond.

Yes, last  year was one of the worst droughts on record in the state of Texas. With no measurable rain since January of 2011, temperatures climbed to 100 degrees or more and stayed there for over three months.

Then came the fire.

High winds brought down an electrical line. One small spark, tinderbox landscape, and 30 mph sustained winds resulted in one of the worst fires in Colorado County history. Homes were lost, landscape charred, and lives forever changed.

This is that same pond only four months later. Rain had given the land a long-awaited soaking. Today, even in the summer heat, the ponds have water and new growth covers the black scars of the fire. And though the landscape has been forever changed, wiped out in one fell swoop, new life has sprung forth. Beauty from ashes.

The day that fire ravaged our land changed us too. I'll never forget the lingering stench of smoke and ashes, or what it was like to help someone sift through the remains their home. The excitement shared when a set of china was unearthed intact. Or the laughter over a charred pickle.

Jeremiah 29:11 says, "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

God's ways are definitely not our ways. Things happen in life that sometimes make us question His plans. We can wallow in self pity and question why, or we can cling to God's promise. We can be angry or we can trust.

God is faithful. I've seen His hand and I will choose to trust.

Happy Tuesday, y'all.

  5. The verse in Isaiah 61 states that God gives us beauty for ashes that HE may be glorified. You've done a wonderful job of glorifying him in this post.

    Blessings!
